Something a bit out of the norm from the mono region. Of course I haven't seen EVERYTHING shot from here, mind you... and there is a lot. But I haven't seem anything from this area which was previously not accessible due to water levels. But, thanks to the DROUGHT, now it is. The stretch of lake floor that was exposed, during this time, was still extremely saturated, and I had to make my way through knee deep, super thick, high suction mud, that I seriously thought I wouldn't escape from at a few points. Not to mention all the tiny pieces of broken tufa mixed in with the mud, AND, doing it twice back and forth. Once to scout, and then again for the shoot. By the end, my scraped up, muddy, slimey(have you ever FELT Mono Lake water? It's disgusting), and numb(it was winter) legs were pissed. Both times I got back from that voyage through the sludge, my shoes and pants were just wrecked. I found a gas station restroom in the near by town of lee vining, and locked myself in there, washing the mud out in the sink... in just my underwear. Haha... and I had to do it twice! I had nothing else to wear. I travel light.

So, for the shot, it was this small-ish opening in a tufa, and in order to get the view I needed, the camera had to be a good ways into it, which didn't allow me to use a tripod. I managed to shoot a 5 shot focus stack, handheld, which made blending later on... interesting. I didn't nail it... there are parts out of focus on the full res file, but it's acceptable. Contortionist skills would really come in handy sometimes.

As I was shooting, I heard the sound of footsteps coming from a distance. I look back and I see a photographer, big huge wading boots on, huge fully extended tripod draped over his shoulder, trying to follow me out to where I had ventured. 'Ha, good luck dude.' I thought as I watched try to carefully navigate through the mud without sinking into it like I had. Not happenin man. Eventually he made it out... and he just wanted to see what I was up to... right in the middle of the good light when I was working to get my shots. Asking me questions, idle chit chat. He wasn't even going to shoot because his focus was a night shot later on. Ok, so leave me alone please? Isn't it an unspoken rule, don't bother another photographer right in the middle of when the good light is occuring? He was clueless apparently. But I guess it's hard to resist the curiosity evoked from seeing half of a body sticking out of a tufa hole.
