Penn Station - Profile of Tracks to the West

Long considered impossible, the Pennsylvania Railroad finally entered New York City from the west at the begining of the 20th Century. Starting with at a portal into the side of the New Jersey Palisades (Bergen Hill) the tracks descended under the North (Hudson) River and then rose again to the station. Not shown is the incredible geological complexity of the route, with potential catastrophe all along the way. After more than 100 years, this route is still in daily use by Amtrak and New Jersey Transit. In fact it is used beyond capacity and additional tracks are desperately needed.

Added June 2021: after more than 100 years work is finally beginning on a new tunnel to New Jersey. Space for the route through the new West Side Yards development has already been reserved and much of Monihan Train Hall is now open. Once the new tunnel is open (no time soon) the old tunnel can undergo desperately needed repair and upgrade.
