Mexico City - Metrobus Expansion Protest - "The Centro Historico Is Not for Sale!" - Compromise Solution

With three lines now open, plans to expand the system to the narrow streets of the older districts is running into local opposition. Mesones is a particularly narrow street that would be totally taken over by the reserved lanes of a Metrobus line. An earlier proposal to restore street car service in the Centro Historico was dropped for being too expensive. Right now, walking is often the fastest way to get around.

The area around Mesones / Simon Bolivar was full of stores selling musical instruments and sound equipment.

Added December 2012: Metrobus Line 4 started running in April 2012 on slightly wider Ayuntamiento / Republica del Salvador, one street north of particularly narrow and historic Mesones. Line 4 uses shorter non-articulated busses and stops at the curb in crowded areas, rather than at stations in a reserved median. This probably addresses some of the objections. In any case it was up and running less than a year after this photo was taken.
