WABC New York - Top 100 Hits 1966 - For War - Against Drugs

The beginning of the end of traditional Top 40 radio. The first row of DJ's were popular (with somewhat different audience segments) -- only Dan ingram and Cousin Brucie were still there by 1970.

#1 song for the year was Ballad of the Green Berets. Celebrated the Special Forces in the Vietnam War. Tried to avoid listening to. On a similar theme was "Gallant Men" by Senator Everrett McKinley Dirksen, long time Senate Majority Leader. On the top 40 list for a few weeks in early 1967. Not a tribute to the War but to the soldiers. Stood next to him in the Senate Cloak Room in 1957 - impressive suit and haircut. Even had a radio program "The Ev and Charley Show".

#55 was "Kicks", an anti-drug song. The Hippies considered it too "Square" and the follow-up was the Pro-drug "Hungry" - both written by Mann/Weill and very similar in sound.

"So you thought you found yourself a little piece of paradise

but it ain't happened yet so better think twice

No matter what you do you'll never run away from you

and if you keep on trying you're gonna pay the price"

"Kicks keep getting harder to find

and kicks won't bring you peace of mind

You better get yourself straight

before its too late."

"Herr Bosker" Anderson (what the other DJs called him) was the last of the "old-timers" on the station. He was in the 6AM - 10 AM spot and appealed mostly to housewives. He always sung his theme song at the end of the program.

Dan Ingram was the Evening Drive Time host. I always listened to his program after school. He was a bit sarcastic and suggestive. Introduced "She's a Fool" with "Lesley Gore, she's a" leaving out the final word exactly as the song started.

Said about program director Rick Sklarr (who sometimes filled in for a DJ): "His voice is lower than an earthworm's navel in the IRT tunnel under the East River".

"Cousin" Bruce Morrow had the early evening slot. He was a bit silly. Pretended to be embarrassed by pretending not to mention a certain "animal part" in an ad for a take-out chicken chain. Talked about "Muffin Morrow the Wonder Dog" explaining "you always wonder what he is going to do next ... and where". Before every news break "keep your motor spinning it's only the beginning".
