Long time racist bigot George Wallace survived an assassination attempt to speak at the 1972 DemocRAT convention. Trying to divert attention from it's long time "Segregation now. Segregation forever" platform the convention made a sharp turn to the left and nomination George McGovern. McGovern lost in the most lopsided rout ever, leaving Nixon as President.
