Hemmaberg pilgrimage church

The Hemmaberg is an 842 m high mountain in the foothills of the Karawanken and is located west of the village of Globasnitz in southern Carinthia. There has been a Celtic sanctuary on the summit plateau since at least Roman times. In late antiquity, there was a hilltop settlement here with an older church and two twin churches built simultaneously at the beginning of the 6th century. The settlement perished around 600. In the Middle Ages, a pilgrimage church was built on the summit, and Rosalia, the saint of the plague, has been worshipped in the Rosalia Grotto since the Baroque period. The name refers to Hemma von Gurk. The finds from the archaeological excavations are exhibited in the Globasnitz Archaeological Pilgrim Museum. (wikipedia)
