By Drosoulites is a known optical phenomenon seen around Fragokastello in the region of Sfakia , Crete in the south . Observed almost every year between May and June during the morning hours . These moving shadows observed in plain Frangokasteilo from surrounding mountainous areas. The name has to do with their appearance in the morning , along with the morning dew . Local tradition links the phenomenon with the deadly battle that took place in the area in May 1828 between the rebels and local residents in the Turkish army corps .
