Geraldo, basket weaver. In a dark cellar in Martina Franca he sat weaving his baskets. There was little light in the small workshop. A lightbulb overhead, and otherwise just the little daylight that filtered in through the open door. I sat with him for a good twenty minutes and we talked about Italy and life. He lives alone, has never had a wife and is content with himself and life. At the end he gave me a basket he made himself.

 

Geraldo, cestaio. In una buia cantina a Martina Franca sedeva a tessere le ceste. C'era poca luce nel piccolo laboratorio. Una lampadina in alto, e per il resto solo la poca luce del giorno che filtrava attraverso la porta aperta. Mi sono seduto con lui per una ventina di minuti buoni e abbiamo parlato dell'Italia e della vita. Vive solo, non ha mai avuto una moglie ed è contento di se stesso e della vita. Alla fine mi ha dato un cesto che ha fatto lui stesso.

 

Geraldo, Korbflechter. In einem dunklen Keller in Martina Franca saß er und flocht an seinen Körben. Es war wenig Licht in der kleinen Werkstätte. Ein Glühbirne über ihn und sonst nur das wenige Tageslicht, dass durch die offene Türe nach innen drang. Ich saß gute zwanzig Minuten bei ihm und wir unterhielten uns über Italien und das Leben. Er lebt alleine, hatte nie eine Ehefrau und ist mit sich und dem Leben zufrieden. Am Schluß schenkte er mir einen selbstgemachten Korb.
