Leone del Pireo_Venezia 2020_Rolleiflex 2.8E

Il Leone del Pireo è una delle quattro statue di leoni presenti all'esterno dell'Arsenale di Venezia. La statua originariamente si trovava al Pireo, l'antico porto di Atene. Fu portata a Venezia come bottino, dal comandante navale Francesco Morosini nel 1687, durante le guerre della Lega Santa contro l'Impero Ottomano, quando i veneziani assediarono Atene.

 

The Piraeus Lion is one of four lion statues on display at the Venetian Arsenal, where it was displayed as a symbol of Venice's patron saint, Saint Mark. It was originally located in Piraeus, the harbour of Athens.
