There are various steady locations for street art in and around Lisbon with pretty much ongoing showcases of various pieces, both graffiti and other forms of art. Since the city is unique in having a government division for street art, called Galeria de Arte Urbana or simply GAU, which is under the City of Lisbon administration, it means that street art is not only promoted but actively encouraged and funded by the city. Most notable is the GAU wall in Bairro Alto which contains ongoing exhibitions by top artists in Portugal, the more recently dedicated wall in Rua João de Oliveira in Alcantara, and the LX Factory close by, an old industrial estate now used by galleries and design companies, but also with some great pieces around.
