Just finished this brilliant and deeply disturbing book by Irish author Paul Lynch, which deservedly won the Booker Prize in 2023.
If you ever wondered how a country can slide into authoritarianism, how law and order can break down, how people are 'disappeared', how a government turns on its own citizens, how families struggle to survive as a city comes under siege, how refugees flee across borders and into boats, this book will tell you how it happens. Beautifully written and terrifyingly prescient for the times we're living in, it's a book that will live with me for a long time.
