7900A-03 September 1979

Cass Scenic Railroad Shay #5 is in the distant background, heading south toward the Cass station - Cass WV - Sept 1979. There are a couple of interesting items in this picture - first, the former Chesapeake & Ohio passenger cars at the far side of the depot. These were used as a temporary depot after the old station was destroyed by fire. Next, beyond the C&O cars and still on the siding are some ex-US Army WWII hospital cars, built by ACF, IIRC. I think these were later swapped for something or other with Chessie System by the WV Railroad Authority. They were practically unused in their military service. Finally, the old sawmill is still intact in the distance on the right. I think it burned within a year or two of this picture.
