ROYAL SCOT - AT TWICE THE SPEED LIMIT!

Under a stunning blue sky, ex-LMS steam locomotive 46100 "Royal Scot" on the first of a number of 50 mph speed tests on the Severn Valley Railway. The SVR was given special permission to run the loco at twice the line's normal permitted speed limit of 25 mph. The newly overhauled engine was being tested ready for future mainline operation. It is pictured here in a brilliant burst of sunshine on October 13th on the first run between Bewdley and Kidderminster. As it approached Bewdley Tunnel here, the empty stock four-carriage train was running at 46 mph. It made an amazing sight and sound as it came up the incline out of Bewdley. I almost had to do a double take as I have only ever seen trains here at a much more sedate pace!
