5164 tank engine's farewell...for now

A sad day for Great Western Prairie tank engine 5164. In the gloom and drizzle of a windy and chilly January afternoon, the 83-year-old steam locomotive is making what was being called her Last Trip. 5164's ten-year boiler certificate has run out, and the engine must now await an overhaul before she can return to service. The loco has been with the Severn Valley Railway since 1973. She is pictured here approaching Platform 2 at Bewdley station in Worcestershire with the 2.00 p.m train from Bridgnorth to Kidderminster on Sunday January 5, 2014. The train was packed - several making the journey to be a part of the engine's history. There was a sense of sadness and pride, and the day before someone chalked a face on the smokebox door, complete with a tear and frown (in a style we remember from the decline of steam in the 1960s). Here the engine driver is handing the single line working token to the signalman. The LNER carriages are crossing the stone Wribbenhall Viaduct. Look at the smoke coming from the chimney of Bewdley North Box. The photograph was taken from the wooden footbridge at Bewdley station.
