Verizon DROID Event Keynote

Verizon and Motorola today launched the Droid Turbo 2, a high-end Android-powered smartphone with a "shatterproof" screen.

Droid Turbo 2 is pretty large, though, in part because of all of the layers, the metal frame, and the big battery. The processor is a 2GHz Snapdragon 810, and the phone has 21-megapixel and 5-megapixel cameras. The Turbo 2 has a juicy 3760mAh battery that should be good for two days of use, featuring Qualcomm QuickCharge fast-charging technology. There are 32GB and 64GB units, expandable via the MicroSD card slot. The Turbo 2 also has a Moto Maker option, where you can get various back styles, including pebbled leather.

The shatterproof technology will be exclusive to Verizon in the U.S. this year, but "we will leverage the technology and the innovation across the portfolio," said Jeff Miller, Motorola's corporate VP of sales.

The companies also launched the Droid Maxx 2, which Miller said is a Verizon-specific version of the global Moto X Play phone. The Play, and the Maxx 2, have 5.5-inch, 1080p screens and Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 processors. The Maxx 2 has 16GB of storage plus a MicroSD card slot, along with a large 3630mAh battery and 21-megapixel and 5-megapixel cameras.

Both phones will get updates to Android 6.0 Marshmallow, Motorola says. They arrive on Oct. 29. The Droid Turbo 2 will cost $624 or $720 if you want the 'design refresh' otpion. The Droid Maxx 2 will cost $384.
