Carlisle Station

by Banchango

Carlisle has been one of my favourite locations for railway photograph and just watching the trains go by for a number of years. I still try to get there when I am in UK. I have happy memories of enjoying first class sleeper journeys from there to Euston in the 1980s and early 1990s. I always used the service where the sleeping cars were attached at Carlisle but were available a couple of hours earlier. If I was lucky or could persuade the attendant to change my compartment I would have a room with a window overlooking the running line. With drinks brought by the attendant I could sit on the end of my bed by the window and watch the night freights pass through the station. I also remember that the sleeping cars were shunted onto the rear of a train from Glasgow by a Class 08 Locomotive. Haulage by a Class 08 on BR was otherwise an extremely rare occurrence.
