Class 06 at Reading Depot in 1985

A fine sunny and warm day for an excellent Reading Depot Open Day. On display was a Class 06 locomotive then in departmental use as 97804 although it had not been cleaned up for the occasion. Formerly 06003 and before that D2420 this locomotive was built for British Railways by Andre Barclay, Sons & Co, Ltd in 1959 (works number 435). It has proved itself as a survivor. It lasted in BR service longer than most of its Class 06 compatriots thanks to its spell in departmental use. It was withdrawn soon after this photograph was taken and the following year (1986) sold to C F Booth for cutting up. However instead of scrapping the locomotive Booths sold it to preservationists. It is reported to currently be under repair/restoration at Peak Rail in Derbyshire.
