Hunslet 0-6-0ST taking water on the Isle of Wight Steam Railway.
Thursday 16th July 1992 on The Isle Of Wight Railway. The locomotive is 198 Royal Engineer which was built by Hunslet for the War Department in 1953 (works number 3798).
Like so many of the IoWSR carriages 4112 behind the engine has an interesting history. It was built by the South Eastern Railway as a 6-wheel Brake Third in the company’s Longhedge Works in 1898. In 1919 after being inherited by the South Eastern and Chatham Railway it was converted to a salon. It was inherited by the Southern Railway in 1923 and 1 year later its became a 4-wheel vehicle and was shipped to the Isle of White where it worked until withdrawn in 1938. The body was saved and used as a bungalow at Gurnard Marsh on the Isle of White. Later this body was saved for restoration and is now running on an ex SR PMV underframe. It is now 118 years old.
