Fort Clonque, Alderney

Wednesday 5th August 1998 and a view of Fort Clonque on Alderney in the Channel Islands. The fort was built in the 19th Century when the British Government was becoming increasingly concerned about French naval power. It was manned by 50 men and armed with 10 cannon but none of these were ever fired in anger. It was acquired by the Landmark Trust in 1966 and now provides comfortable self-catering accommodation.
