Tintern Abbey (1)
Tintern Abbey was founded in May 1131. It is situated in Monmouthshire in Wales on the Welsh (Western Bank) of the River Wye. The other side of the river is Gloucestershire in England. The Abbey was closed in 1536 as part of King Henry VIII’s dissolution of the monasteries in England, Wales and Ireland. The lead from the Abbey’s roof was sold and the buildings then began to decay. For over 250 years the build continued to deteriorate but at the end of the 19th century it became fashionable for tourists to visit such places and although it has not and will not be restored it has received enough attention to at least slow down the decay.
This photo which is a scan of a poor print was taken at Easter 1975.
