The Thames Barrier

Operational since 1982 the Thames Barrier is designed to protect most of London from the serious risk of being flooded by tidal surges from the North Sea. It can be closed and opened as appropriate to protect London from high tides, let water from The River Thames flow out to sea during low tides and allow shipping to pass.

This is a scan of one of my father’s photos from around 1991.
