HMS (SS) Andes in the Suez Canal
I assume this is the Suez Canal. This photo is from my father’s collection and was taken during WW2 when he was in the Royal Navy.
Andes was of 25,000 tons and built by Harland & Wolff in Belfast for the Royal Mail Lines Company. She was completed in 1939 as the Second World War started and was immediately requisitioned by the British Government and fitted out as a troop ship. In 1947 she was returned to Royal Mail Lines and refitted as originally intended which was as a very luxurious liner for the South America run. As well as serving on the South America run she also occasionally served as a cruise ship. Then at the end of the 1950s she was converted to a full time deluxe cruise ship. She was retired in 1971 and eventually sold for scrapping in Belgium.
