47823 SS Great Britain at Hereford.
Saturday 17th April 1993. On this day with my father, uncle Geoff, cousin Tim and I went on a Cheshire Railtours round trip on The Settle and Carlisle Line. Our route from Hereford took us via Shrewsbury, Crewe, Carlisle. Appleby, The Lancashire Witches Line to Blackburn, the avoiding loop at Preston and then back again via Crewe and Shrewsbury to Hereford. Our locomotive for the day was 47/8 No. 47823 SS Great Britain which was in fine form. The train mainly consisted of Mk 1 TSOs with a few Mk. 2s. There was a licensed trolley service all day and a book shop in the guards/luggage area of one brake coach. It was a well organised and very enjoyable tour.
47823 was later renumbered 47787 when it was fitted for push-pull working. The locomotive was built for BR by Brush Traction at Falcon Works, Loughborough and entered service in September 1964. It still exists and is owned by West Coast Railway Company but is currently stored out of use at Carnforth.
