Manitoba Indigenous Cultural Education Centre (1908)
The former All People’s Sutherland Mission, has been serving the Point Douglas community for over 100 years as an educational facility. Designed by prominent architect J.H.G. Russell, the intent of the mission was to create a multifunctional space for preaching, education, and recreation to meet the needs of new immigrants. The first superintendent of the All People’s Sutherland Mission was Rev. James Shaver Woodsworth. The MICEC has occupied 119 Sutherland Avenue since 1977. Conservation Minister Bill Blaikie was among the staff of the former All People’s Sutherland Mission who suggested that the building be donated so that the centre could continue its work in an area that has a large Aboriginal population. The centre took ownership in 1981 and provides much needed services to the area. We recognize the historical significance of the building and our restoration honours the former All People’s Sutherland Mission’s rich history as an educational facility and community landmark. For Doors Open, MICEC will have guided tours and lectures by Roger Roulette on the History of Aboriginal people in Armstrong’s Point and in Southern Manitoba.
