Last Light on the Virginian

A few falls ago we find ourselves at the classic Virginian Railroad location of CP Kumis, just west of the major NS Roanoke terminal. This portion of the former Virginian railroad's mainline serves as a lower grade alternative to the very parallel Norfolk and Western main a few hundred yards away.

In this image we see NS loaded scrubber stone train 68V rolling to a stop due to terminal congestion ahead. This evening's 68V was the last in a line of 6 eastbound unit trains that were all vying for track in the crowded Roanoke terminal. The 68V would later head down the Winston Salem district overnight with an eventual destination of the massive coal-fired Terrell power plant near Catawba, North Carolina.

Thanks for looking!
