CSX time freight M653 has just exited the Nolichucky Gorge into Poplar, NC, on a cloudy spring morning. The greens of spring are less than a week old at this point. M653 is running through some of the most pristine mountain railroading scenes in the east. The Blue Ridge Subdivision of the former Clinchfield Railroad will take this train south along the Toe River to Altapass where the train will descend the Blue Ridge Escarpment, via the Clinchfield Loops, towards an eventual crew swap at Bostic, NC. The rural scenes between Poplar and Marion are some of the best around, and are always a favorite to visit.
