Early Morning in Green Mountain

It's very early on a rainy summer morning in Green Mountain, North Carolina, and we are alongside the former Clinchfield Railroad mainline of CSX Transportation. The roar of the parallel Toe river all but drowns out approaching CSX freight M693. A little haze still hangs in the air, and soon soft summer rain will begin. This section of railroad is one of my favorites in the world. The CSX Blue Ridge subdivision lazily winds its way through its namesake mountain range towards Spartanburg, SC, some many miles south. Many miles of harsh grades out of Erwin, TN, had the heavy 693 crawling all the way into Poplar siding a few miles back, and they'll be grinding south again in a few near Toecane. Ahead lies the Blue Ridge summit, and the famous Clinchfield Loops. For now, 693 is just rolling along the Toe River, and through the Idyllic countryside that surrounds the Clinchfield in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. Thanks for looking and enjoy!
