Networks in Telecommunications

October 24, 2011 - "Networks in Telecommunications: Economics and Law" - Penn Program on Regulation recently hosted a book symposium on Professor Christopher S. Yoo's book "Networks in Telecommunications: Economics and Law", co-authored with Daniel Spulber as well as a panel discussion on the book including The Hon. Stephen Williams, a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C Circuit, Herbert Hovenkamp, the Ben and Dorothy Willie Professor of Law and History at the University of Iowa, and Howard Shelanski, Professor of Law at Georgetown University. Yoo and the panel discussed the book's theme of the impact of regulations upon telecommunication networks. Yoo argues that if regulation encompasses telecommunications networks, innovation and efficiency within information and technology systems are hampered, leading to monopolies. Yoo considers that, as regulatory measures within information and telecommunication networks are important, understanding the networks themselves would go a long way towards adapting regulations to better aid telecommunication networks. Professor Yoo is the Penn Law School’s John H. Chestnut Professor of Law and the Director for the Center of Technology, Innovation & Competition at the University of Pennsylvania.
