Women's Asylum 1 Jackson, LA.

The Jackson State Hospital has served mentally ill Louisianians for over 150 years. But at one time, separate wings of the hospital housed the criminally insane. In this post, we feature the women’s unit for the criminally insane, long abandoned but most creepy! Inmates lived dormitory-style on two floors of the facility; the basement housed offices and the domestic functions such as the kitchen.

Today, the Louisiana State Police and other local law enforcement agencies use this building to train their drug-sniffing dogs and practice forced entries. The percussion grenades have especially taken a toll on the 1908 building. But the structure itself is solid. On the day of our visit, we encountered an officer from the Dixon Correctional Institute, who was training his dogs. This is a true piece of Louisiana history. Info from web search.
