Miss America Runner-Up Sue at Her Diner Job

During the late 1950s:

After Sue won a scholarship as runner up competing as Miss New Jersey in the Miss America contest, she made sure that she never let herself get swept away by thinking of herself as 'rich' or 'famous.'

"People knew who I am the week after the contest but they soon forget," Sue realized. "What I really achieved was the scholarship to help take pressure off my parents to help financially with college."

Not one to take anything for granted, Sue soon went back to her job at Joe's Diner on Elizabeth Avenue to earn even more money for college to increase her financial security.

"I don't want to be calling Mom and Dad every week asking for spending money," she reasoned. "I want to be a mature, responsible adult and take care of myself as much as I possibly can."

Yet, several customers were taken aback to see Miss New Jersey at her old job. They seemed to assume that she would have moved onto Hollywood or the Upper East Side.

"No, I'm still here, for the time being," Sue told them cheerfully. "Then, I'll be off to college. But everything I'm working at now is my foundation. So even if I do live on Park Avenue someday, in part, I'll owe it to my work at Joe's Diner."
