East of Newberry Springs, CA - former U.S. 66 "Hector Siding Roadside Rest Area" - October 14, 2000
Near Interstate 40 Exit 33 "Hector Road." This is named after the Santa Fe Railway siding located north of this location. This was one of 3 roadside rest areas in the desert between Barstow and Needles, built by San Bernardino County in 1958. This location, as with the other 2, once sported covered picnic tables and outhouses. At the time of this visit, the remains of the metal outhouses were still there.
