Auburn, CA - vintage postcard of the Old Town area and U.S. 40 - circa early 1950's
In the lower left corner (running from the bottom to the left side of the card) can be seen the U.S. 40 highway bypass of Auburn which opened in 1947. This photo was likely taken in the earlier years following its opening due to the intersection still allowed vehicles to "cross it". Sometime in the 1950's it would be upgraded to "freeway standards" and in 1960 this section became I-80. The old U.S.40 alignment through town was the street off to the right (Lincoln Way) seen passing in-front of the old fire house, then curved up the hill to the left and past the other side of the old courthouse ween at the center of the photo.
