New dog, take two.
Still sad that Doc didn't work out, but seeing as how Apache and I both felt while we had him, it's clear a second dog - the right dog - would be better to have than not.
Enter Chester, who the bcr folks had suggested to me. He's one of their fosters and I had overlooked him because he wasn't -physically- what I was looking for (b&w border collie). Still, from his foster parents' description, he could be ideal for our niche.
He's a funny boy: a fun-seeker who has the silly gene. Kind of a city-dog who is unfamiliar with stairs and hills and trails, but he's learning fast.
As far as we can tell, he's a kelpie-border collie mix. Apache is mostly tolerating him, though she has yet to actually "play" with him (considering she's a cranky old bitch, she's showing a LOT of tolerance!).
First things first: a new name.
Meet AN00BIS, pointy-eared black dog, the new-boy (so N00b for short).
