MonsterPalooza 2013
by furtech
I went to Monsterpalooza on Saturday (note to self: get there early or late: mid-day and parkind is non-existant).
Wow. This has gotten HUGE. I remember only a few years ago this was a relaxed, smallish con that spfx folks got together to schmooze. Now- it's packed! Like SDCC on a Saturday! Banged by backpacks, run over by stollers (kids here?!? WTF?). Still, it's a nice way to touch bases with a lot of people. The ones still doing practical effects are diehards and very dedicated to the craft (reports of whose death have been slightly exaggerated).
As usual, there were a LOT of neat sights to see: the museum had some great displays; vendors and shops touted their skillz; the walkaround costumes were pretty spectacular. A couple of the creatures walking around blew me away (or really creeped me out). Fantastic werewolf: he not only had a great suit, but he really knew how to make it come alive. The two creepiest: a guy with an animatronic cockroach eye and the creepy midget-kid-thing.
