German Grocery Store
by furtech
One great convenience of the convention: there was a mall and grocery store right across the street. I love foreign (to me) grocery stores: seeing the different foods, ads, etc. is neat. Plus, I can snacking foods for the hotel stay. German Jams and preserves are great (and you can buy mini-loaves of bread to go with it).
Some things like the ubiquitous cup-ramens were familiar, while others like the hard-to-recognize antacid meds were not.
This store (a common chain store) also had a small but interesting plant section: they carried aquarium plants here along with the normal house plants. Kind of cool.
Kinder Eggs: a big weakness of mine. Love the chocolate, love the treasure-hunt. This time the themed toys were characters from "Dog City". This is not the Henson show, but I'm not sure if they have a show in Germany or not. My goal: the German Shephers or the fruity Afghan character.
Another bit of German ingenuity: they keep tabs on the carts by charging a fee to use them. You stick a Euro coin into the slot to release the cart, and when you return it you get the coin back. Very nice.
At the nearby Deli I was able to indulge myself with my shameful secret food: raw sausage (here in the form of an open-face sandwich). All my instincts tell me this is wrong...but it tastes so good!
At the same Deli was a weird food advert, for what was either a long hotdog/sausage or internal parasites.
