Freiburg Bächle
I warn you: there will be a lot of pictures of these little rills that run throughout Freiburg. The bächle are unique to this area (afaik): they are -not- sewers or drains: they are (relatively) clean, cool water diverted from streams and creeks that would otherwise run through the town any way. Kids and adults cool their feet in them; cafés cool wine and beer in them; dogs cool their feet AND drink from them.
I am from Los Angeles. Freiburg and it's bächles are as alien to me as any place I've visited.
I can only imagine that this is what El Dorado must have seemed like to those Spanish visitors: where gold was so common they paved streets with it. To have a city were water is so common you can have these rills running 24/7 through them...wow.
