Good Modelling For Animation

Good Modelling For Animation

Creating quality 3D models for an animation film is an integral part of its overall production. It is important to give careful consideration to all aspects of modelling as each form's an integral part of the finished product. The main areas that need to be considered are modelling, texturing, UV unwrapping, rigging, skinning, animating, rendering, particle and other simulations, non-linear editing, compositing, and creating interactive 3D applications. All of these individual aspects are important, and need to be mastered, in order for the finished piece of to be viewed as a masterpiece of animated modelling.

Viewer’s first impressions are always very important and in order to catch their attention good modelling must be an inherent part of the animation. Without this the chances of the animation being successful are very limited. In my opinion one of the best pieces of modelling is that of Gromit in the film “Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit”. The use of non verbal communication portrayed by subtle body movements and the use of Gromits hands (paws) and facial expressions is part of what made the film so memorable. Without this masterfully created piece of modelling by Nick Park of Aardman animations this film wouldn’t have achieved half the success that it has since its release in 2005. Gromit doesn't ever say a word, but there has never been a more expressive character (animated or otherwise) to grace our screens (Empire on Line - The 50 Best Animated Movie Characters).
