Cantwell, Alaska

Alaska Railroad GP40-2 No. 3008 is parked at the small track department depot and yard in Cantwell, Alaska for a weekend break from its work train duties. This unit is part of a group of fifteen originally built for the Alaska between 1975 and 1979. The railroad ordered them with basically every option EMD offered at the time, which included Stratolite Beacons, marker lights, rotating gyralights, and the same L-shaped engineer side windshields which the Southern Pacific was well known for. This engine was built with the L windshield like all the others but it was replaced with the standard window configuration sometime during 1990s.
