Saint Louis, Missouri

An unusual afternoon trip to 12th Street Yard by the Alton & Southern’s 102 has resulted in Union Pacific’s YSL52 job making a move up the steep elevated connection track from Lesperance Yard, up to 12th street to grab their train. The crew is seen here easing back downgrade with the heavy cut of freight in tow, passing under the impressive MacArthur bridge, which the 102 job just utilized to cross the Mississippi River.

The MacArthur Bridge is one of two crucial TRRA owned and maintained bridges in Saint Louis (the other being the Merchant’s Bridge) which funnel all rail traffic between the Illinois and Missouri sides of the river. On this particular day, the Merchants Bridge was in the middle of a weeklong outage which involved the final span being replaced. The resulting delays and congestion caused by all traffic being routed via the MacArthur allowed for many opportunities for unique moves such as this to be documented.
