It Happened Again

After shooting BLE 867 leading northbound empties a few weeks ago, I figured it would most likely be a while before another opportunity to photograph the unit presented itself. Last week however, the unit was sighted in the road consist again, this time facing south. I dragged myself out of bed very early Friday morning and after speaking to Lance Shott, we agreed that we would meet at Conneaut in an attempt to chase the train south, granted 867 had not been plucked off. I arrived at the docks just ahead of Lance and was glad to report that 867 was indeed on the train and would lead south. It was cold, snowy, and unfortunately cloudy for my last 867 chase, but this time, sunshine and blue skies were abundant, quite a rare feat for this area.

When the train pulled out of the docks to double up, I couldn’t believe how sharp the unit looked in the sun. It seems that every time I visit, I enjoy the Bessemer more and more. We took the first action shot of our chase here off the Route 20 bridge in Conneaut and the sound of the engines notching up to climb the hill was absolutely incredible and I was sure to walk extra slow back to the car just so I could hear the non-turbo EMD sounds echoing through the valley. With news that IC 1018 is now bad ordered and supposedly headed back to CN, cherry moves like this may become more common, at least for the time being as Bessemer Orange is now once again the dominant scheme on the property.

BLE 867 notches up and begins to climb upgrade out of Conneaut, Ohio with some kind of rock as well as taconite loads for North Bessemer. January 26th, 2018.
