Tashkent - a street scene

If Almaty is like Bishkek on steroids, Tashkent is like Almaty on growth hormones. The main streets of the city are extremely wide - usually with 6 or 8 traffic lanes. The Independence square is more than half a mile long. The center extends over several miles, and walking around to explore it is not feasible - public transportation is a must. Unlike Bishkek or Almaty which were built by the Russians in the 19th century, Tashkent, like most other large cities in Uzbekistan, is two cities in one. The modern Russian built section is next to a traditional Moslem city which is several hundred years old.
