Registan - Tilla Kari internal courtyard

A view of the internal courtyard of the Tilla Kari madrassa, built in the 17th century. Each one of the three madrassas in the Registan consisted of a large internal courtyard, surrounded by two floors of galleries which provided entrance to the individual rooms were students lived. The internal courtyard served both as a school and as a mosque. This floor plan is common to all major traditional madrassas in the historic cities of Uzbekistan.
