Samarkand - the Registan

Samarkand, as the capital of Timur's empire in the 14th century, was filled with monumental buildings, some of which still stand.

One of the main attractions in Samarkand, the Registan was a set of three Moslem religious schools (madrassas) facing one another around a square courtyard. The entire complex was completed over the course of a couple of hundred years. Its monumental size is striking.
