Drepung monastery - Lhasa

Completely surrounded by a wall, filled with narrow lanes and extending over a large hillside overlooking Lhasa, the Drepung monastery seems like a small fortified village. Largely destroyed during the cultural revolution, it has been almost entirely rebuilt. Drepung is supported by donations of Tibetan nomads, who leave their migration grounds on the Tibetan plateau during the harsh winter and come to spend the winter months in the relative comfort of the capital.
