Savoia Marchetti

Nov. 1, 1929. Savoia Marchetti S-55, flown from New York to San Pedro, Cal. via Chicago, Pensacola, Honduras and Mexican Coast. Crew consisted of Bill Atwater, Harold Sarri, and E. K. Jaquith. While attempting to cross the mountainous districts of C. America during a storm, they ran out of gasoline, and were compelled to land the plane on an island, far from human habitation. According to the Van Nuys News of Nov. 5, 1929, "gaining the little shelter which the island offered, the wanderers, frenzied by skin poisoning and thirst, wrote an S.O.S. in big letters on the sands" and the three men were eventually rescued by Harry C. Goakes.
