The Challenge

Do you challenge yourself when planning a day of photography? At times I do such as take one lens and make the best of every opportunity to make a meaningful photo with it. On this particular day I chose to take my 100mm micro the plan was to concentrate on the macro elements inside the swamp. And as stories go the plan was quickly interrupted when I saw this cotton mouth sleeping on a log just feet away from the boardwalk. What to do? Oh, why did I have a macro lens today??

I know that snakes can strike one third to one half their own body length so once the thoughts racing through my brain settled down I got into position at a safe distance for a few quick frames. This water moccasin was very tolerant because did it not coil or display when I was near but it also lay there as many people passed by on the boardwalk without any signs of aggression. We've probably all heard stories of cotton mouths chasing people the thing is they need their venom for hunting food sources and they aren't going to unduly waste this precious tool unless they feel threatened. If they do come directly at you they are most likely heading to their safe spot, I've had such an encounter and was freaked out for weeks afterwards. It didn't hesitate it just vanished into tall grass after passing by.
