The teepee tree

Wandering the boardwalk is food for the imagination. I’ve seen this tree before and never stopped to imagine who has used this cypress tree as refuge from weather or just a haven to rest. From the looks of the interior it has stood in the floodplain for a good long while because the high water lines are on the inside of the opening as well as the exterior of the tree. Cypress knees are part of the root system that help the trees breathe when water levels are high and the height of these knees are fairly short which is an indication of how high the water gets so I imagine the water recedes fairly fast. I’ve been told the trees cannot survive when the knees stay submerged indefinitely whether it’s truth or folklore is something you will need to investigate for yourself then feel free to comment should this statement be folklore awww what the heck, comment anyway :}
