John Ellis says: #1 "Now I see the mystery of your loneliness " There was plenty of comment on this early shot. Most of all I like how much context is given without detracting from the tethered animal visually - not just that, but how alive the scene is, as if to make the observer think harder about what is being represented.

John Ellis says: #3 "Stars, hide your fires; Let not light see my black and deep desires" A very English dwelling appears to have slipped through a wormhole into a darker place. The sculpted face seems alive and to have designed the scene in this other world to satisfy his desire for others to suffer and fail to find the entrance to the cottage where good exists...hopefully.

John Ellis says: #4 "Sit by my side, and let the world slip: we shall ne'er be younger" This appeals firstly for the daring pov and oblique approach to the quote. Daring because it depends on the viewer buying into it, but the use of the 'mature' legs tells so much more.

John Ellis says: #5 "For she had eyes and chose me" There is skilful use of the materials to create the composition - the peeking of the eye, the lining up of the fencing with the components of the ship's superstructure, the way the former runs into the distance, and the positioning and scale of the man looking. Finally, the eye seeks out the photographer and seems to regard the elder man in his suit as not her type.

John Ellis says: #6 "There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy." So simple a stage but allowing us to appreciate what perhaps the speaker had not imagined. We have the advantage of looking down and seeing the rake and broom at right-angles and the whites set off by the coloured flowers beyond.

John Ellis says: #7 "Fear no more the lightning-flash." I wonder if John saw the dog created by the mangled umbrella in the bin. But he did see the potential nightmare of a lightning flash scenario to illuminate a macabre scene.

John Ellis says: #11 "My soul is in the sky" A very modern take but done with both good timing and humour. The balance of the way the people by the cliff edge look skywards set against the possible target of their gaze coming round to hit the boy is perfect to fill the composition.

John Ellis says: #9 "You kiss by the book." To a certain extent I wanted to avoid a direct kiss, although I was sorely tempted by Shang's shot. What I think makes this shot work so well is the relative innocence/inexperience of these two and how their body language suggests that a kiss might eventually arise, even if not on public transport.

John Ellis says: #10 "We are such stuff as dreams are made on, and our little life is rounded with a sleep" This quote allowed for a wide range of interpretations. Ilkka's shot allows us to range over a fascinating interior and the intriguing human actors before finding the sleeping bear. Sweet dreams.

John Ellis says: #12 "All the world's a stage" Such a well-caught family moment. The never-ending social exchange that is the family - the living as they are, and others in photos at points in time.
