John Ellis says: This shot does two things: first, it tells us about the conditions and how people, children in particular, seek to avoid the heat; and, second, provides via the banner a teasing question as to why it is there and why the young woman is holding it.

John Ellis says: Apart from being able to appreciate the lovely strong colours, this does go to the heart of today's Europe.

John Ellis says: There is always a danger when giving an explanation (what does 'caracol' mean in English?) that the viewer instantly sees something different to what would have been the case without the text. Nonetheless, even without knowing the word snail in Spanish, the image has a roughness and colouring that befits this man on his bicycle along with his place to sleep.

John Ellis says: The ambiguity of the man's situation gives the interest here, along with wonderment at the size of his gut!

John Ellis says: I wrote: "Excellent catch with radiant light. The big plus is the mystery of what lies beyond the hedge." I might also add that one gets a funny feeling in the tummy each time the shot is opened.

John Ellis says: This can be looked at in different ways: SP trope or social commentary. Or perhaps both. There is an added dimension in that the use of the reflected background gives an impression of heat as these people ignore the sign on the left and take their 'fag' break. The shot is unusual enough in its presentation to stand out.

John Ellis says: Is the boy picked on by the others? Why does he have that expression and why is he unable to get up to the higher level where, presumably, there is a better view of what ever it is that is going on? The photographer is in a good position between his subjects and the object of their interest.

John Ellis says: The blacks and the stretches of women's legs are a good starting point. Then each woman carries something that may or may not be relevant. Finally, when the eye gets to the woman clearing tables on the pavement we wonder what this unusual scene is all about.
