John Ellis says: The sea and a beach are tempting locations but it is necessary to work on the subject matter a bit more, as is done here. In this shot there is a strong sense of emergence from winter and the possibilities for far more people to be here in swimming costumes. The frames of the huts/kiosks would be covered in canvas. The composition is well thought out with the grassy hummock being very usefully placed.

John Ellis says: The way the clouds are drawn make this quite painterly. Altogether this is a magical depiction of this stretch of coastline and the multitude of human activity caught in the soft light. The young man in his black coat could be an embryonic poet or painter.

John Ellis says: Across the wetlands to a spread of industrial activity. The sweep of the composition is well judged, including as it does the birdwatcher and his book. An enchanting shot in neutral colours and grey.

John Ellis says: The park is delightfully presented and the balletic activity of the girl sets it off very well.

John Ellis says: An excellent composition that sweeps up the area round the square, the horse sculpture and the cyclist. The balance of natural and artificial light is very well managed.

John Ellis says: An imaginative response that not only brings this mundane setting to life but involves the viewer in imagining what awaits the man slipping behind the hoarding.

John Ellis says: The approach in this is different - the setting is more abstract and much of the appeal of the shot lies in the play of orange and blue. But the fact that the man's face is hidden by the flap of his hat while behind him hangs the poster 'Love not hate' leads the viewer to consider wider social issues as well as how that worker might be involved as an individual.

John Ellis says: The sea is involved here in a less obviously aesthetic way but emphasizing how humans use the aquatic environment on their doorstep. The natural inhabitants, the gulls, turn their back on the invaders.

John Ellis says: Here I see the emphasis being on the human action defining the location, and both are linked by the snow. Good use is made of the section of wintry light.

John Ellis says: The curve of his left leg leading up that strange monument is an added bonus to the silhouetting, the rising steam and the strong red that sets off the slightly mysterious skyline of the city.

John Ellis says: This is a B-side. The lane is distinctive enough, but the woman with her broom is perfect for telling us about the location.

John Ellis says: This urban scene with its pub certainly captures a certain English look. The woman caught by the flash has echoes of someone from the past brought to life in this setting.

John Ellis says: Maybe some of you have travelled to Lisbon already via Paulo's images, and this is a worthy addition with the narrow alley that can still accommodate tram lines.

John Ellis says: This is a more complex shot linking the humans to their setting. The office block provides a man to buy a coffee from the woman at the adjacent cafe. A shot to savour.
